Classic Catwoman by BerolEagle Classic Catwoman by BerolEagle
I found this old Catwoman drawing I did sometime ago on the HDD and decided to updated it a bit, this Catwoman is based on the Julie Newmar version from the classic TV show Batman with Adam West.

Edited: The original was a bit rushed, now it's more finished. Press download to view at full resolution ;)

I really like this look of Catwoman actually, having seen the original myself, it's funny cause she slightly reminds me of the new Catwoman in Dark Knight Rises for some reason. Or of course correctly, the other way around.

The scales? better question, how did she get a outfit like that? Miss Hathaway's outfit is cool, but it doesn't really seem like catwoman it seems like a black widow thing, if it had a bit more uniqueness and still fitted in the movie, it would have been better, Newmars outfit I like a lot more actually, but I can't really imagine it in the movie, it just doesn't seem that.. I don't know.. Fitting with the whole tone of the movie, however the mask hathaway wears is so weird, I don't really understand it's exact purpose, it's not covering her face, it's not like she really has a secret identity, it's completely unneeded.

Maybe Gothams's underworld has their own answer to Edna Mode to make their outfits for them...? (Rather than the stupid idea of Michelle Pfeiffer making her own costume out of a cut-up coat in 'Batman Returns' - with the result that in a multi-million dollar blockbuster the principal villainess arrives at the party in a tatty and amateurish-looking Catwoman suit that would have got her laughed out of competion at Comic-Con - she could simply have STOLEN herself a professionally-made catsuit or a slinky black wet-look unitard simply by breaking into a local sex shop or sports goods outfitter).

To return to 'The Dark Knight Rises'. My other main quibble is that they gave in to the temptation to do the obvious and put her in thigh-high boots - and those heels!!! Miss Hathway would look far more like a professional cat burglar and less like a dominatrix if she'd worn calf-length boots like Eartha Kitt. (If she still wanted to injure people with her heels the stilettos on Julie Newmar's ankle boots would have done the job just as well).

But when all's said and done, my biggest complaint about Miss Hathaway's Catw- I mean, Selina Kyle, is that in a film that's nearly three hours long, she simply not on screen enough...!

XD Good point on the Edna Mode thing, and as for the Thigh High Boots.. To be honest I completely didn't notice that at all, XD Maybe I didn't see her feet much on screen or something, eh, I don't know. And I have nothing wrong with how much she was on screen, she had enough time in my view, but my problem is that they don't explore or explain the other girl character that's with her, that would have explained Selina Kyle in the movie if they explored that area more closely, that would have been interesting.

You probably didn't notice her boots because they chose to stage her main fight scene out of doors at night. Right up to the point where she replies "In your dreams" to Alfred's comment that Batman had found himself a girlfriend at last, Ms Kyle was plainly shaping up as a lesbian; then - as they do in the movies - she suddenly and disappointingly forgets all about her girlfriend Jen and goes all girly on us by pleading to Batman "Take me with you!". Sigh...!

Other way around, she said "Come with me" xD And that wasn't her girlfriend last I checked.. I THINK That's really suppose to be Holly Robinson from the comics, only they changed her name to "Jen".. Which I REALLY don't get, but whatever. Last I thought they were just close friends.. Even though Holly in the comics was a openly gay character, in the movie I didn't see Kyle shaping up as a les, I just saw that she had a friend that she probably grew up with, that was my take on it anyways.

Yeah, I realised I'd got the line wrong almost as soon as I'd posted it...

I know from things I've read elsewhere that I'm not the only one to have read her relationship with Jen that way (wishful thinking perhaps). There was occasionally a certain ambiguity about the way Julie Newmar swung in the TV series, since she often had a shapely female sidekick - one of whom, Lesley Gore, who played Pussycat, actually later came out in real life - with whom she seems rather familiar. On one occasion she can't bring herself to pull the trigger on Batman and blurts out "Can't you see? You're the only man I've ever...".

Warner Brothers should stop tampering with perfection and simply paid Fox whatever they wanted for permission to dress Miss Hathaway in a replica of the original Newmar outfit. The look they've given her in 'The Dark Knight Rises' is a considerable improvement on the boringly predictable bondage look they gave Michelle Pfeiffer; but Hathaway still looks more like just another biker chick than the sleek arch-villainess portrayed by Ms Newmar...and why did they give her such an ugly mask?

It's not that it's ugly, it just doesn't make any sense as towards it's design.. We don't understand why it looks so complicated and metallic when it should be simple and elegant, her outfit looks fine, but JUST fine, it's weird though that they never really mention the name "Catwoman" that much..

Not deigning to call her Catwoman I think demonstrates that 'The Dark Knight Rises' suffers from a rather superior attitude towards its subject matter. In any other context I absolutely agree with you that I'd love Miss Hathaway's outfit; but this is the one and only Catwoman we're talking about and Julie Newmar's costume still combines sleekness and an air of purpose in one delicious package that none of the more recent variations have achieved...and why has Miss Hathaway's catsuit got scales on it...?

The highest praise that I can bestow is that you fully do justice to your subject.. When do we get the new version you promised us back in May? (I wouldn't say No to some renditions of Lee Meriwether or Eartha Kitt either).

As the first to wear the costume in the TV series, some of the refinements came from Ms Newmar herself, such as wearing her belt around her hips instead of her waist. Her version of the costume remains the definitive one: accept no substitutes! The S&M look they gave Michelle Pfeiffer was boringly predictable, poor Halle Berry looked like a bottom of the range lap dancer, and Anne Hathaway is going to be indistinguishable from countless other biker chicks. When are the geniuses responsible for the costumes in these movies going to realise that you don't mess with perfection and reinstate the Newmar look...?

Working on it, I'm just holding it until I finish some older drawings first. I like Lee Meriwether from the movie too but Julie is one of the kind, she was so charismatic as Catwoman, I also liked Lesley Gore as her sidekick for those two episodes. I have the same problem with Catwoman from the comics, the new costume isn't feminine enough for my liking.

Nobody ever mentions this, but what sets Lee Meriwether's interpretation of Catwoman apart from either of the other two 60s Catwomen is that because all the love-dovey stuff is reserved for the scenes between their alter egos Bruce Wayne and Madame Kitka, for the first and last time ever, during the all-too-brief scenes in which she actually appears in costume as Catwoman, Meriwether plays her as a TOTAL bitch whose relationship with Batman is strictly business, entirely devoid of the playfulness and flirtaciousness induged in by Newmar, Kitt or any of the others.

I thought that part was very James Bond'ish, I also liked the scene when they were planing at the beginning, the henchmen were very amusing in their cartoon look. I managed to watch the movie until the middle or so then it was too much campiness, even for me, I just fast-forward to the interesting bits after that.

Wished there was an HD collection of the original TV show.

She's the one in the Batman 60's movie right?

Since then I've gotten better Julie Newmar refs, I made a bunch of studies and I can now draw her likeness without reference, so the new Catwoman drawing I want to do should come out much better.
